I am not sure how best to communicate to my HR Team. Is it best to overcommunicate or is that perceived as micromanaging?

Whenever you have new information it should be shared to your team by every means possible. Transparency and empathy are key in all your communication. Information is powerful in clarifying the “unknown” in a crisis. It helps address the fear factor for everyone by updating the latest facts showing that you are on top of the situation and concerned for each team member. In Gene Klann’s book, Crisis Leadership, he articulates his three R’s: review, repeat, reinforce. “If information is shared only once, it cannot be assumed everyone has received it – or if they did, that they understand it.”

When communicating, it is helpful to frame your message in the following format:
1 – Tell them what you're going to tell them.
2. Share the content.
3 Recap what you've told them.

This allows your audience to fully grasp your communication.

In addition, the video platform Loom.com has been a great resource for me, someone who's worked primarily from home for years. You can record a brief video message (or instructions, sharing your screen if need be) and immediately have a video ready for sharing with a link. No need to upload anywhere. During these times when teams aren't seeing each other in person, communication with video becomes even more necessary to build trust, eliminate possible misunderstandings, etc. Plus it can be fun!
